About Tacoma

The City of Destiny, as it’s locally known, Tacoma is located on the Puget Sound, a scant 32 miles south of Seattle. Tacoma gets its name from Mt. Rainier, which the Native Americans called “Takhoma” or “Tahoma.” The tag, “City of Destiny” originated because Tacoma was chosen to be the western boundary of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s. This connected the railroad to Tacoma’s Commencement Bay, which serves the Port of Tacoma, Washington state’s largest port.

Things to Do in Tacoma, Washington

Tacoma is still a major shipping center (one of the largest on the Pacific coast.) But it’s so much more than that. Today, Tacoma is a thriving city, offering visitors and residents a plethora of cultural, entertainment, and outdoor activities.
If you’re a foodie, Tacoma has you covered with great dining along the waterfront or on 6th Avenue. In addition, Tacoma has been voted of the “most walkable” cities in the country.
If you like museums, you are in the right city. With 10 museums in the area, Tacoma could be called the “City of Museums.” Of note, there is the Museum of Glass, an incredible museum that has to be seen to be believed. It features permanent and traveling glass exhibits as well as live glassmaking demonstrations, classes, and a shop. If you like history, you can choose from the Washington State History Museum or the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, both of which are excellent and well worth the visit. If you’re a car enthusiast, you’ve reached nirvana with a visit to the LeMay America’s Car Museum.
If you like to bike, hike, or walk, Tacoma has miles of trails and paths that take you through some of the most scenic natural beauty found anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. The City of Tacoma’s website can give you a starting point to choosing your road less followed.

Tacoma Fun Fact

Tacoma is also infamously known for the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which garnered it the nickname “Galloping Gertie.” Learn more about it on Washington State Historical Society’s video.
